The first American gasoline automobile was the 1893 Duryea, but the 1895-96
model, pictured here, was the most important of our early cars. The Road Wagon
was entered in the Times-Herald Race from Chicago to Evanston, Illinois, and back
on Thanksgiving Day, 1895. The race was held in such heavy snow that only two
cars finished: the winner, a Duryea driven by J. Frank Duryea, and a German Benz
entered by the Mueller Manufacturing Company. The success of this Duryea led
to the production of thirteen identical cars in 1896, the first such quantity building
in this country. This picture shows the Duryea used by the Barnum & Bailey circus
in 1896. At that date, the automobile, distinctly a curiosity, belonged more in the
Greatest Show on Earth than on the road. The sole remaining Duryea of this pro-
duction run belongs to George H. Waterman, Jr., of East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
